Re: Natto?
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 6:36 PMI'm pretty into natto, but lately I've gave it up after having a super hard time finding it without bonito (tuna flakes in disguise). Where can I get natto in the bay area that's bonito-free? -

Re: Natto?
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 12:48 PMthe bonito is in the flavoring packet. I always dispose of that and just use shoyu
or you can make your own.

Re: Natto?
Wed, August 1, 2007 - 1:08 PMNatto is fermented soy beans (google: natto). I saw it in a cookbook and was curious. Websites say it's very stinky and most westerners will not like it. There is even a website about a couple's quest to force themselves to enjoy natto over a long period of time.
I liked it the first time I tried it. It's part of a nutritious Japanese breakfast. Try so it's very good ; ) -

Re: Natto?
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 9:41 AMWhen I was little my mom used to eat it alot (she is Japanese). It smelled bad and looked strange, my sister and I used to tell her she was eating spider webs (what do you expect from little kids). I love food and trying new and different vegan dishes but couldn't get past the spider web thoughts of it from childhood. However seeing that other people actually like it, I may have to try it now.

try mixing it with sesame tahini, make a paste and spread it in on things (like chips, rice, pasta, tempeh, etc.
miso is good. it has B12. i like it.

Re: Natto?
Thu, August 9, 2007 - 7:33 AM"However, the present consensus is that any B12 present in plant foods is likely to be unavailable to humans and so these foods should not be relied upon as safe sources.
This article is really enlightening:
www.vegsoc.org/info/b12.html
and Wikipedia too.
