Hey all. I've been a vegetarian since April 07. I've gone vegan twice, the first time was not that successful. I wasn't eating very healthily so I went back to vege. Second time I had better success, but I've since fallen off and gone back to vegetarian. The thing is, I love those veggie burgers and they have egg/milk in them. Cookies are also a yummy problem.
Do you have any recipes for those yummy problems of mine? I absolutely love the Morningstar Farms black bean veggie burger. Any ideas how to make one?
As far as cookies, yes, I know oreos are vegan (which is creepy if you think about it too much). Any other options?
Any idea on how to make the transition a bit easier? I find that many of the things I eat have hidden egg/milk; such as flatbreads or pitas, pasta. Generally grain type stuff.
Thanks all

Sun, November 23, 2008 - 8:09 PMIf you love cheetos, try Tings, which are made by the same guys who make Pirate's Booty, but are flavored with Nutritional Yeast, instead of cheese. YUM.
Really, I'd recommend going to a health store and getting Ener-G Egg Replacer, and some soy milk, and make your own delicious cookies!! There are zillions of recipes out there, and I highly recommend the egg replacer. I'm a professional baker, and use it - works great! I'm sure you could order it online, too.
Here ya go: www.amazon.com/Ener-G-Bak.../B000F6SA6K
It can also be used for burgers and such, as a binder....flex your culinary muscles and get cooking!! :)
As for burgers, I love Trader Joe's Marsala Burger - totally vegan, and totally delish! -

Mon, November 24, 2008 - 1:34 AMOriginal Boca Burgers are vegan. And if you do have a Trader Joe's where you live, they sell vegan chocolate chip cookies that are scrumptious. Also a vegan trail mix cookie that's really good. They also sell vegan muffins. And many pastas don't have eggs in them, they are not hard to find. Breads are more difficult to find without milk or honey. Many of the breads made from sprouted whole grains are vegan, I've found. Hope this helps some.

Wed, November 26, 2008 - 11:23 PMLorna Doones. I eat two of them and one After Eight dinner mint sandwiched between them. Omigod yum.
Speaking of omigod yum, I was in the Whole Foods today and they had some of their Field Roast en Crute! I stood there and spoke to a woman who gushed when she heard I was ordering some. She'd just tried it for the first time. Sofuckingood.
Soy Dream mocha fudge with Soyatoo! all over the top and some toasted almonds sprinkled over top of that. To die for.
Spagetti with marinara sauce or pasta prima vera. Garlic bread made with vegan buttery spread and a glass of white wine.
Cheerios and bananas or strawberries, maybe just a teaspoon or two of raw suger sprinkled over.
Homemade oatmeal cookies with raisins and cinnamon. Maybe dried cranberries and orange bits instead of the raisins. Maybe made with Gran Manier as the liquid and dried cranberries.
Fritos.
Tortilla chips and salsa.
Okay, I'm stuffed. Off to bed to dream of nice light salads. Maybe French bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar...

Re: Going back to Vegan
Thu, November 27, 2008 - 2:59 PMAre you ever in luck! Vegan baking is not as hard as it seems, especially with help from the experts.
I've had great success in baking recipes from Isa Chandra Moskowitz (Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World, Vegan With a Vengeance, Veganomicon, check out the Post Punk Kitchen on line). All you need is a a few special ingredients and a yummy vegan recipe and wammo! delicious vegan cookies fresh out of the oven.
Lots of bread that is cheap and icky and comes from the grocery store doesn't have eggs or milk. On the other hand, I know of two bakeries in my area that make vegan bread. One is a sourdough bakery and the other I think doesn't use milk or eggs for some reason unrelated to veganism. You just have to ask bakeries how they make their bread. Or make your own bread!
Nothing is more satisfying than making pitas from scratch. The only problem is keeping them longer than one meal. It's a little time consuming but so rewarding and cathartic.
You can find lots of recipes on the internet, but I prefer cookbooks because they are usually more legit.
Good luck! -

Re: Going back to Vegan
Sat, November 29, 2008 - 7:43 PMI am like you! This is my second try at being vegan, and this time I am determined to do it right. The first time I just ate Morningstar Farms stuff and mostly refried beans, and wound up feeling icky most of the time. Now I'm exploring new recipes and foods because I really want to make this life change stick for me, and make me feel healthier at the same time.
I was missing cookies...so I looked for some good vegan recipes...here's a YouTube video showing a really simple (like 10 ingredients only!) recipe for vegan chocolate chip cookies that is amazing! I use vegan carob chips when I make these...and they are SO good!!!
www.youtube.com/watch
Thanks for all the great replies to your post...I'm getting some terrific ideas! :)

Re: Going back to Vegan
Sat, November 29, 2008 - 7:44 PMOh and I have to add that the Ener-G egg replacer is awesome stuff. I used it to mix up the Pumpkin Bread mix I got at Trader Joe's last week...and the bread came out perfect and delicious!

Sun, November 30, 2008 - 3:33 PMI used that in the corn bread mix I got at the market and added a can of nibblets corn. MMMMMMMMMMM guuuuuuud. Eat warm, with a bit of Natural Balance buttery spread on top! So darn good, I can eat a whole box myself, but like to share with my dogs. They love corn bread. -

Re: Going back to Vegan
Mon, December 1, 2008 - 6:46 PMThe key to staying vegan is cooking. You need to eat a varied diet of non-processed foods. Stay away from too many chips and such. Don't worry about the hidden ingredients at first. Go gradually and start with replacing the obvious animal products. Once you have those down work on the label reading. Don't make it too hard on yourself. You can do it! -

Re: Going back to Vegan
Wed, December 3, 2008 - 12:20 AMI cook every day now. However, when I started I was determined but close to overwhelmed at the idea of living off sprouts and couscous or whatever it is that Hippies eat. Fritos and Cherrios were familiar. They made me feel less like a nut and right about then everyone around me thought I'd gone nuts.

Re: Going back to Vegan
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 7:27 PMI ABSOLUTELY second the Isa Chandra Moskowitz recommendation - that woman has recipes for the most fantastically fantastic of fantastic food.
Here are some vegan blogs to get you started:
veganyumyum.com/
seitanismymotor.wordpress.com/
www.myvegancookbook.com/blog/
vegandad.blogspot.com/
blog.fatfreevegan.com/
VeganYumYum has AMAZING food photography and her food is delish.
I recommend My Vegan Cookbook's recent hot chocolate recipe - it's astronomically tasty.
I made tortilla soup from FatFreeVegan last night
blog.fatfreevegan.com/2008/03...oup.html
I highly recommend garnishing with a few handfuls of cilantro, a sliced avocado, some tasty salsa, and some tortilla chips
Last night I also made chocolate-cherry-mousse pie, also from FatFreeVegan
blog.fatfreevegan.com/2008/04...pie.html
Which was AMAZING. Clearly not fat-free. Absolutely lusciously delicious. Adored by housemate and lover alike.

Re: Going back to Vegan
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 8:52 AMGo to vegweb.com total lifesaver. You can find any vegetarian recipe you love with a vegan translation. It is really awesome. I've been vegan for almost a year now and you really do have more options than I thought. My boyfriend and I are always making deserts and all kinds of yummy snacks.
